Too hot or too cold?? Truth of germination temperature?!

Hi! I will talk about germination temperature today.

About the choice of good seeds company please visit here

Or the basic of succulents from seeds please visit here

I was not caring much about this important part initially, but one of tropical seeds made me realise how important this is!!!

If you are sawing general flower seeds like Forget-me-not, Aquilegia, Snapping Dragon, etc. they are mostly fine sowing outside without much care, and blooming beautifully from spring to autumn.

In the case of succulents, you will saw the seeds indoor most of the cases (If you live in milder climate than UK, you may saw them outdoor of cause!). Majority of seeds germinate around 22-24 degrees centigrade (71.60 to 75.20 Fahrenheit), and your room temperature is mostly in that range. But sometimes room temperature is slightly lower especially in winter time. I sowed Mimosa Pudica (aka Sensitive plants, my children love to touch them as the leaves move.) around 100 seeds, but only a few came out. I was so shocked and couldn't understand why, but it was simply too low temperature for them!

Then I installed seedling heater underneath. Then did you know what happened? 100 out of 100 seeds survived!!!

Please check here ↓↓↓ if you are interested into the heating equipments!

Mimosa Pudica is one of the extreme case, but the temperature improve germination rate quite a lot. BUT some seeds need low temperature unfortunately. So this is not 100% solution for every species. I know climbing onion and Boophone plants needs lower temperature from my experience at least.

So please leave half of your seeds if possible, and try different temperature next time if you had very low germination rate!
